Panel discussion

Water for Climate Pavilion

Building climate resilience through integrated water and land-use planning in Latin America.

In this panel, we will learn from the experience of stakeholders about which adaptation measures have been effective in adapting to climate change. We will analyze how natural resource management plans, such as land and water, can be a platform for implementing these adaptation options. We will share financing strategies that have been successful in supporting the development of adaptation strategies.

Countries have various planning instruments for the coordinated use of natural resources (i.e., water, soil, energy, fauna, flora). These instruments seek, on the one hand, to understand the effect of multiple users’ transformations on natural resources and the limits of these transformations to ensure the health of ecosystems and the ecosystem services they provide.

Therefore, historical and current alterations are analyzed, and future scenarios of expected changes should be included, under historical climatic conditions and with climate change. Likewise, strategies to adapt to climate change should be incorporated.

The hydroclimatic risk component should be fundamental in preventing the possible effects of extreme events such as shortages, droughts, fires, or floods and torrential rains.

In this panel, we will analyze adaptation measures that have been effective in different contexts, such as early warning systems, the definition of controlled flood areas, and the restoration of waterways, among others.

The financing of these measures and their sustainability is one of the challenges facing decision-makers, and in this panel we will address possible sources of financing based on the successful experiences presented.
