Water for Climate Pavilion

A Source to Sea approach to biodiversity enhancement and climate adaptation through ecosystem restoration and NbS

Highlighting the crucial role that Nature-based Solutions (NBS) play across rivers, wetlands and particularly mangroves as part of a broader Source-to-Sea approach.

Through our event, we aim to spotlight the role of Nature-based Solutions (NBS) within a broader Source to Sea approach, recognizing that healthy rivers, wetlands and especially mangroves are essential connectors between land and ocean. Van Oord, through its Ocean Health business line, is actively applying this approach by working with mangroves in multiple ways: restoring degraded ecosystems, integrating them into nature-based engineering for coastal protection, embedding them within sustainable aquaculture systems, monitoring their ecological performance, and exploring viable economic models around them. With two case studies from Mozambique and Vietnam, we are eager to share our experiences on how mangroves contribute to coastal resilience, ecosystem health and local socio-economic development. The discussion will also reference established standards and guidance for Nature-based Solutions and water resilience to inform practical and technically sound approaches. We also warmly welcome other partners to bring in their own perspectives and solutions, to collectively explore how NBS can drive impact across the full Source to Sea continuum.

To strengthen the full Source-to-Sea continuum, the Dholakia Foundation brings experience from the inland freshwater ecosystem side through its flagship Mission River program in India. The initiative has rejuvenated multiple rivers, ponds, and watersheds by using community-led and science-backed Nature-based Solutions such as check dams, groundwater recharge systems, and native afforestation. These interventions have restored ecological flow, enhanced biodiversity, improved soil carbon, and secured water availability for thousands of farmers.
